Making Maps

I was completely blown away by the absolutely gorgeous watercolor maps that Mike Reagan (Cartoonist Survey #279) creates, and was inspired to paint some of my own.

Weapons of mass creation.

These maps are really fun to make, and I've been blessed to have already sold one of them.

Hi David! I'm Julie, and I found your blog while browsing Pencil Revolution.

I enjoy your maps and was wondering--what do you reference when penciling? Are you looking at a map that already exists?

Thank you for your time!

Hi Julie,

Thank you for your kind words.

I use a hodgepodge of references for penciling the maps. I have tons of old atlases and road maps which I use with a combination of some online references.

Take care,

David
